Swaraj Tractors, Mahindra Susten Commission 42 MWp Group Captive Solar Project in Punjab

03 September 2026, Chandigarh: Swaraj Tractors and Mahindra Susten have commissioned a 42 MWp group captive solar project in Bathinda, Punjab. The project is expected to meet around 50% of the electricity requirements of Swaraj Tractors’ manufacturing operations in Mohali.

Developed and commissioned by Mahindra Susten, the project will supply renewable electricity to Swaraj Tractors’ manufacturing, assembly and foundry operations. Its remaining capacity is proposed to be used for the electricity consumption of other Mahindra Group entities in Punjab.

Located in Village Teona Pujarian, Talwandi Sabo, Bathinda, the solar facility covers approximately 141 acres. It uses N-Type TOPCon bifacial solar modules installed on fixed-tilt structures.

The project is expected to generate approximately 61.54 million units of renewable electricity annually and offset more than 42,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

Commenting on the commissioning, Gaganjot Singh, Chief Executive Officer, Swaraj Division, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., said the company is focusing on reducing energy consumption and replacing conventional energy sources with renewable power.

“Nearly half a century ago, Swaraj was founded on the principles of self-reliance and independence. At a time when India is reducing its dependence on fossil fuels and progressing towards a greener environment for its people, Swaraj is proud to contribute through a two-pronged strategy: reducing energy consumption and progressively replacing conventional sources with renewable energy,” Singh said.

He added that the solar project complements Swaraj’s energy-efficiency initiatives and will take renewable energy to more than half of the company’s energy requirements.

Earlier this year, Swaraj received the Golden Peacock Award for Energy Efficiency. In 2023, all Swaraj tractor manufacturing plants achieved EP100 certification for doubling energy productivity, seven years ahead of the Mahindra Group’s stated commitment timeline.

Avinash Rao, Managing Director and CEO, Mahindra Susten, said the project expands the company’s role in renewable power supply to commercial and industrial customers.

The commissioning of this project also marks Mahindra Susten’s maiden foray into supplying power to creditworthy commercial and industrial customers through the group captive structure, complementing our traditional model of supplying power to government utilities,” Rao said.

The project is among the largest group captive solar installations in Punjab at the time of commissioning, according to the companies.

More than 97% of the project components were sourced from India. The facility will also use semi-automated robotic systems to clean the solar modules, which is expected to save an estimated 1.92 million litres of water annually.

Environmental and social impact assessments, along with a climate change assessment, were undertaken during the project’s development. Measures have also been introduced for waste management, vehicle movement and reducing disturbance to the surrounding ecology.

Swaraj said its sustainability initiatives also include water-positive manufacturing plants and Zero Waste to Landfill certification across its manufacturing facilities. The company is also working on reducing product-related Scope 3 emissions, supplier decarbonisation, green dealership programmes and ESG capabilities.

Mahindra Susten is the renewable energy platform of the Mahindra Group and operates renewable energy projects across solar and hybrid power. The company is also developing Battery Energy Storage Systems.
