The Preceon™ Smart Corn System is a digitally enabled corn production system developed by Bayer around short-stature corn hybrids. Unlike conventional corn, which typically reaches around 9–12 feet, Preceon short-stature corn is targeted at 7 feet or less, with shorter, thicker stalks designed to improve standability and reduce risks associated with lodging and greensnap during severe weather.

Preceon goes beyond seed genetics by combining short-stature corn products, digital decision-support tools, tailored agronomic recommendations, and crop-management practices. Bayer’s Climate FieldView™ platform provides field-level data and recommendations intended to support planting, crop management, input optimization and harvest decisions. The system can also provide greater in-season field access for standard ground equipment, potentially allowing farmers to scout crops and apply inputs later in the season.

Bayer has been developing Preceon through its Groundbreakers field-trial programme, working with farmers in commercial growing environments. The company is pursuing multiple development approaches, including conventional breeding, a biotech approach in partnership with BASF, and a gene-editing approach in partnership with Pairwise. Bayer’s current pipeline identifies the biotech introduction for the U.S. in 2027, while commercial development is progressing across additional markets.

Recent research has also examined the system’s sustainability potential. A 2026 study reported an average 13% reduction in the carbon footprint of corn production in the conditions studied, associated with factors including productivity, root development and input management.
