India-First AI Models refers to agricultural AI models initially developed with India’s agricultural ecosystem, crops, landscapes, and local challenges in mind, with their applications now expanding beyond India. A prominent example is Google’s Agricultural Landscape Understanding (ALU) and Agricultural Monitoring & Event Detection (AMED)models, developed by Google DeepMind’s AnthroKrishi team. The models use remote sensing and machine learning to identify agricultural fields, water bodies and vegetation boundaries, while monitoring crops and agricultural events at field level.

The models were initially developed to strengthen agricultural resilience in India and are now being expanded to other countries across Asia-Pacific and Africa. Their outputs are available through APIs and Google Earth, allowing governments, agritech companies, researchers and other organisations to build applications for crop monitoring, acreage estimation, irrigation advisories, climate-impact assessment, crop diversification, financial access and farm management.

India’s wider agricultural AI ecosystem is also developing rapidly. Government initiatives include Bharat-VISTAAR, a multilingual, AI-powered digital public infrastructure platform designed to provide farmers with location-specific information on crop management, weather, market prices, pest and disease alerts, and soil health. Other initiatives include AI-enabled pest surveillance, digital crop surveys, Farmer IDs and agricultural decision-support systems.

This category features India-first agricultural AI models, Google DeepMind’s ALU and AMED, satellite-based agriculture, remote sensing, crop monitoring, precision farming, AI-powered farmer advisories, climate-smart agriculture, digital public infrastructure, agricultural data, AI research, international expansion, and applications of Indian-developed agricultural AI technologies globally.
