11 August 2026, Tokyo: Sumitomo Chemical has filed applications for the registration of bifemetstrobin, a novel fungicide, in Japan, the United States and Brazil as the company advances development of the active ingredient for agricultural use.
Bifemetstrobin is a proprietary active ingredient discovered by Sumitomo Chemical and belongs to the QoI (quinone outside inhibitor) fungicide group. The fungicide targets a key process involved in energy production in fungal pathogens.
According to Sumitomo Chemical, internal and external evaluations have demonstrated strong efficacy of bifemetstrobin against soybean rust, a significant disease affecting soybean production in Brazil and other regions. The active ingredient has also shown activity against strains that have developed resistance to existing QoI fungicides.
The company expects bifemetstrobin could provide an additional tool for fungicide resistance management, helping growers manage disease pressure and protect crop yields. Subject to regulatory approvals, Sumitomo Chemical expects products containing bifemetstrobin to be launched after 2030.
The company also plans to pursue development and registration of bifemetstrobin in additional countries.
