10 August 2026, New Delhi: India has successfully formed 10,000 Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) under the Central Sector Scheme for Formation and Promotion of 10,000 FPOs, the Government informed Parliament on Thursday. The milestone marks the completion of one of the country’s largest initiatives aimed at strengthening collective farming, improving market access, and enhancing farmers’ incomes.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, 1,175 FPOs have been established with 100% women members, while women account for approximately 40% of the total shareholder base across all FPOs formed under the scheme. The guidelines also require every FPO to have at least one woman member on its Board of Directors or governing body.
The FPOs are engaged in a range of agricultural business activities, including the supply of farm inputs, aggregation of produce, procurement, value addition, and marketing. As of 31 July 2026, the cumulative turnover generated by FPOs established under the scheme has reached ₹20,358 crore.
The government also shared progress on financial and institutional support provided to these organisations. A total of 9,865 FPOs have received management cost assistance, 8,357 FPOs have availed equity grants, and 3,140 FPOs have benefited from the scheme’s credit guarantee support.
Under the Central Sector Scheme, every FPO receives professional handholding support for a period of five years from the date of registration through designated Implementing Agencies. These agencies, working with Cluster-Based Business Organisations (CBBOs), provide capacity building, business planning, market linkage support, and other interventions to strengthen the operational and financial sustainability of FPOs. Additional support is extended to organisations that exhibit lower levels of business activity.
The Ministry noted that FPOs have been formed in different phases since 2020-21 and are therefore at varying stages of business development. As a result, their turnover and operational scale differ depending on their age and level of commercial activity.
