Flue-Cured Virginia (FCV) tobacco is a major commercial tobacco type grown in India, particularly in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. It is characterized by its lemon to orange colour, medium-to-large leaves, and neutral character, allowing it to blend well with other tobacco types. The Tobacco Board identifies FCV tobacco as an important export-oriented crop and regulates its production and curing in India through grower registration, crop planning, crop-size limits, and licensing of curing barns.
In India, FCV tobacco is planted during different periods depending on the growing region. In Andhra Pradesh, planting generally takes place from mid-October to the first week of November, with marketing from February to June. In Karnataka, planting generally begins in early May, with marketing from September to February. Karnataka’s light-soil FCV tobacco is known for relatively low nicotine and high filling capacity.
The FCV sector is closely linked to international tobacco demand, auction prices, crop-size decisions, curing costs, export markets, weather conditions, and government policy. Recent developments have also focused on improving the sustainability of FCV production, including the adoption of electricity-based curing technologies that can reduce dependence on fuelwood and improve curing efficiency.
