Tobacco cultivation is an important commercial farming activity in several countries, providing raw material for the tobacco-processing and manufacturing industries as well as livelihoods and export earnings in major producing regions. In India, tobacco is grown across 13 states, with major production concentrated in Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Bihar. Major types include Flue-Cured Virginia (FCV), Burley, natu, air- and sun-cured tobaccos, Oriental tobacco, bidi tobacco, and other specialty varieties.
Tobacco cultivation in India is subject to a distinct regulatory framework. The Tobacco Board regulates the production of FCV tobacco in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka through crop planning, grower registration, production quotas, and annual crop-size targets, taking domestic and international demand and market conditions into account. For the 2025–26 season, the Board fixed crop sizes of 142 million kg in Andhra Pradesh and 100 million kg in Karnataka.
