Gourmet Popcornica is an Indian popcorn company that has built an integrated farm-to-popcorn value chain, spanning popcorn maize cultivation, farmer engagement, procurement, processing, and supply to cinema and food-service markets. The company began in 2014 through a partnership with Nebraska-based Preferred Popcorn and started cultivating popcorn maize in Andhra Pradesh in 2018.

The company has increasingly focused on developing a domestic popcorn maize ecosystem. Gourmet Popcornica works with more than 17,500 farmers across nine states, supporting cultivation across more than 36,000 acres. Its model includes agronomic support, input assistance, structured procurement and farmer engagement, helping build a more reliable supply chain for high-expansion popcorn maize.

Gourmet Popcornica has also partnered with ICAR–Indian Institute of Maize Research (ICAR-IIMR) on popcorn maize research and hybrid development. The collaboration, which began in 2021, has focused on developing high-yielding, high-popping hybrids with improved resistance to pests and diseases. In February 2026, ICAR-IIMR recognised the company’s contribution to the development of India’s popcorn maize ecosystem.

The company is also associated with the development of indigenous, non-GMO high-expansion popcorn maize seed technology, supporting India’s efforts to reduce dependence on imported popcorn seed and potentially develop export opportunities for Indian popcorn maize.
