The Indian Sugar & Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) is the apex association of private sugar mills in India and represents the interests of the country’s sugar and bio-energy industry. The association describes itself as the voice of the Indian sugarcane industry and the 55 million farmers associated with it, engaging with stakeholders on policy, sustainability, agriculture, green transition, and labour welfare.

ISMA’s work now extends beyond conventional sugar to a wider bio-energy and bio-refinery ecosystem. Its focus areas include bioethanol, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), green hydrogen, compressed biogas (CBG), 2G and 3G ethanol, potash, and methanol produced or developed using sugar-industry resources and by-products. The association also supports research, technology sharing, training, and capacity building across the sector.

ISMA plays an important role in discussions around sugarcane and sugar policy, sugar production, ethanol blending, farmer interests, sugar-mill economics, biofuel development, sustainability, and the transition of sugar mills into integrated bio-refineries.
