TARI Celebrates 10 Years, Recognizes IRRI as a Valued Strategic Partner

08 August 2026, Tanzania: The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) has been honored as a Valued Strategic Partner by the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI), highlighting a decade of collaboration aimed at strengthening rice research, innovation, and sustainable agricultural development in Tanzania.

This recognition was presented at TARI’s 10th Anniversary celebration, which coincided with the national Farmers’ Day (Nane Nane) festivities in Dodoma. The event marked ten years of TARI’s contributions to advancing agricultural research and technology dissemination, while also acknowledging the partnerships that have driven these achievements.

For IRRI, receiving this award reflects its long-standing commitment to collaborating with national research institutions to develop and implement science-based solutions for local agricultural challenges. Through its partnership with TARI, IRRI has supported efforts to enhance rice productivity, strengthen research capacity, and promote innovations that contribute to resilient and sustainable food systems.

During the anniversary celebration, IRRI joined TARI and other national partners to showcase collaborative innovations in the rice sector that align with Tanzania’s National Development Vision 2050. The exhibit demonstrated how combining international research with local expertise and national priorities can accelerate the adoption of improved technologies and farming practices that benefit farmers and rural communities.

Representing IRRI at the celebration was Dr. Ajay Panchbhai, who participated in the commemorative TARI Marathon alongside government officials, development partners, and agricultural stakeholders. The event served as a platform to promote climate-smart agriculture, strengthen partnerships, and reaffirm a shared commitment to improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers.

The official anniversary program concluded with a recognition ceremony attended by senior government leaders, including the Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Amb. Dr. Emmanuel John Nchimbi. During this ceremony, TARI honored a select group of organizations whose contributions have supported the institute’s growth and Tanzania’s broader agricultural development over the past decade. IRRI was among those recognized for its enduring partnership and contributions to agricultural research and innovation.

The celebration also highlighted the accomplishments of TARI scientists, including Dr. Atugonza Bilaro, Principal Scientist and rice breeder at TARI, who received the Outstanding Scientific Leadership Award. Dr. Bilaro has been a long-time collaborator with IRRI and was previously recognized with the 2023 Presidential Award for his outstanding contributions to agricultural research.

As Tanzania works to strengthen its agricultural sector and pursue the goals of Vision 2050, IRRI remains committed to supporting TARI and other national partners through collaborative research, capacity building, and the development of innovations that enhance rice-based farming systems.
