Why Are Triple-active Drenches Becoming The New Standard?
18 August 2026, AU: Across Australia, parasite control in both sheep and cattle is changing. The move towards triple-active, or “3-way” drenches isn’t simply about new products. It’s a response to increasing anthelmintic resistance and the need for more sustainable parasite management.
Resistance is now well established in sheep and is becoming increasingly important in cattle. Every time livestock are drenched, susceptible worms are removed while the resistant worms survive and reproduce. Over time, this reduces the effectiveness of traditional single and dual-active drenches, making parasite control more challenging.
Why triple actives work
Triple-active drenches combine three unrelated chemical groups, each targeting worms in a different way. For a parasite to survive treatment, it must already be resistant to all three actives at the same time, something far less likely than resistance to a single active.
This provides two important benefits. Firstly, triple-active drenches deliver more reliable parasite control, even where resistance to one or two actives may already exist. Secondly, when used correctly, they help slow the build-up of resistant worm populations, protecting the effectiveness of available drenches for the future.
Many low-volume triple-active formulations also make accurate dosing easier, particularly in cattle. Accurate dosing is important, as under-dosing is recognised as one of the key factors contributing to the development of resistance.
Triple actives are part of the solution
While triple-active drenches are a valuable tool, they are not a complete parasite management strategy.
No drench can prevent resistance on its own. Blanket treatments, unnecessary drenching and repeatedly relying on the same products can still increase selection pressure and accelerate resistance.
Instead, parasite control should combine effective chemistry with good management decisions.
Why testing still matters
Faecal egg counts remain one of the most valuable tools available to producers.
Testing before treatment helps determine whether drenching is required, avoiding unnecessary treatments and preserving susceptible worm populations. Follow-up testing after treatment can also confirm that the drench has worked effectively and identify resistance before it becomes a major production issue.
Building a sustainable parasite program
The future of parasite control is about more than choosing the right product. It is about selecting the right treatment at the right time and combining it with sound management practices.
Using triple-active drenches alongside faecal egg counts, grazing management and resistance management strategies helps protect livestock performance today while preserving drench effectiveness for the future.
