Nutrien Reviews Trinidad Nitrogen Fertilizer Assets Amid Global Portfolio Optimization
21 May 2026, London: Nutrien has indicated a significant shift in its global asset strategy, moving ahead with plans to divest its nitrogen fertilizer production assets in Trinidad and Tobago while simultaneously launching a comprehensive strategic review of the previously idled Point Lisas facility.
According to internal company documents, Nutrien’s management has evaluated multiple pathways for restructuring its nitrogen fertilizer business in the Caribbean nation. Among the options under consideration is the potential outright sale of the entire asset portfolio. However, the company has clarified that no final decision has yet been reached regarding the future of these operations.
As part of the ongoing review process, Nutrien has entered detailed commercial discussions with National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago (NGC). Both parties have signed a confidentiality agreement, signaling that negotiations have entered a more sensitive and advanced stage. Due to the confidentiality terms, NGC representatives have declined to disclose details of the discussions. Industry observers note that the talks are currently at a critical stage, making the eventual outcome and future structure of cooperation uncertain.
The Point Lisas nitrogen fertilizer facility officially halted operations in October 2025, reflecting broader challenges in the global fertilizer and energy markets. Nutrien has stated that the company is actively pursuing optimization initiatives across several business segments as part of a wider operational restructuring strategy.
Beyond the Trinidad assets, Nutrien is also reviewing strategic options for its phosphate business and agricultural retail operations in Brazil. The company’s broader objective is to streamline operations, improve profitability, strengthen cash flow generation, and enhance long-term operational efficiency across its global portfolio.
The latest developments highlight the continued restructuring underway within the international fertilizer industry, as major producers reassess asset performance, energy costs, and regional competitiveness amid evolving market dynamics.
