India Approves Large-Scale Copra and Totapuri Mango Procurement to Support Tamil Nadu Farmers
09 July 2026, New Delhi: The Government of India has approved the procurement of copra and Totapuri mangoes from farmers in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, expanding its market intervention efforts to stabilize prices and protect growers from distress sales.
The approvals were granted by Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, following a proposal submitted by the Government of Tamil Nadu.
Under the Price Support Scheme (PSS), the Centre has authorized the procurement of 87,226 metric tonnes (MT) of copra during 2026, including 87,000 MT of milling copra and 226 MT of ball copra. The procurement will be undertaken at the Minimum Support Price (MSP), with the total value of the approved procurement exceeding ₹1,049.16 crore (approximately US$122 million).
The government said the measure is intended to ensure remunerative prices for copra growers and provide income protection against market volatility by guaranteeing procurement at the notified MSP.
In a separate intervention, the Centre has also approved the procurement of 96,879 MT of Totapuri mangoes under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) during 2026. The procurement will be carried out at a Market Intervention Price (MIP) of ₹1,545.41 per quintal.
The MIS is designed to address temporary price collapses in perishable agricultural commodities that are not covered under the MSP framework. By intervening in the market, the government aims to stabilize prices, improve returns for growers, and prevent distress sales during periods of excess supply.
