TERI Brings Innovate4Environment Hybrid Workshop to Goa
11 August 2026, Goa: The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) today inaugurated the three-day Innovate4Environment Hybrid Workshop on Communication, Participatory Methods, Project Management and Technical Skills at the International Centre Goa. Organized under TERI’s Innovate4Environment initiative, the workshop has brought together young participants, sustainability practitioners, and academic experts to build capacities for addressing environmental challenges through innovation, collaboration, and community engagement.
Welcoming the participants, Ms Taru Mehta, Senior Fellow & Associate Director, Environment Education and Awareness (EEA), TERI, highlighted the critical role of youth in accelerating the transition towards sustainable development. She noted, “Innovate4Environment is rooted in the principles of Education for Sustainable Development. Sustainability education is not simply about understanding environmental issues; it is about developing the competencies to think critically, collaborate across disciplines, innovate responsibly, and make informed decisions that contribute to resilient societies. In Goa, with its unique coastal ecosystems and close relationship between communities, livelihoods and natural resources, these competencies become particularly important. Through this three-day programme, we hope to connect sustainability concepts with local realities and equip young people with the knowledge and practical skills to develop meaningful solutions for their communities.”
Speaking on the importance of global partnerships in sustainability education, Ms India Palmer, Teaching Fellow, Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG), University of Warwick, emphasized that cross-cultural learning and international collaboration are essential for nurturing future environmental leaders capable of developing innovative and locally relevant solutions to global environmental challenges. Ms Palmer highlighted, “Solving the complex sustainability challenges of our current and future world requires partnerships and collaboration across communities, disciplines and geographies. The I4E partnership between TERI and Warwick Manufacturing Group, University of Warwick provides an opportunity for young people to exchange ideas, learn from different perspectives, and translate these learnings into sustainable action projects. Goa offers a particularly valuable context for this learning, given its rich natural environment and the interconnected challenges of conservation, livelihoods and development. I hope this programme creates lasting collaborations and inspires participants to take forward solutions that are both locally relevant and globally informed.”
Delivering the special address, Dr Raghab Ray, Fellow and Area Convenor, The Coastal Ecology & Marine Resources Centre, TERI, Goa, underscored the importance of understanding local ecosystems and community perspectives in designing sustainable interventions. He encouraged participants to view environmental challenges through an interdisciplinary lens and develop practical solutions rooted in local realities. Dr Ray highlighted how the earth system reinvented itself against past disturbances for millions to billions of years and now leaving human civilization to stabilize environment and climate through science-based innovation and community-based participation. He touched upon the “need for innovation for the degrading ecosystems of Goa, in particular, and encouraged tomorrow’s leader and today’s problem solver, i.e., youth to take the legacy of recovery forward from mother earth through technology innovation and collaboration from different disciplines.”
Introducing the workshop theme, Ms Sonal R. Chaudhary, Research Associate, EEA, TERI, outlined how the programme has been designed to strengthen participants’ technical competencies while enabling them to develop impactful Social Action Projects aligned with real-world environmental issues.
The inaugural day featured interactive sessions on innovation-driven entrepreneurship, opportunities for small-scale environmental enterprises, the fundamentals of environmental education, and behaviour change for sustainability. Through collaborative discussions and hands-on activities, participants explored how communication and community engagement can influence sustainable behavioural change and contribute to environmental stewardship.
Over the next two days, participants will deepen their understanding of research methodologies, carrying capacity assessment, project management tools, media and strategic communication, and the application of technology for collaborative environmental action. The workshop will also include field exposure visits to TERI Goa and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research–Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-CCARI), providing participants with practical insights into green skills, sustainable agriculture, and coastal ecosystem management.
The programme will culminate with mentoring sessions and presentations of participant-led Social Action Projects, enabling young innovators to translate the knowledge gained during the workshop into actionable solutions for environmental sustainability.
Through the Innovate4Environment initiative, TERI continues to empower young people with the knowledge, technical expertise, and leadership skills needed to become effective agents of change in building a more sustainable and resilient future.
