Glyphosate Ban refers to government measures that prohibit, restrict, or limit the sale, application, or permitted uses of glyphosate-based herbicides. Regulatory approaches vary significantly between countries, ranging from complete bans and phase-outs to restrictions on specific crops, application methods, users, or locations. The issue remains closely linked to debates around pesticide safety, agricultural productivity, environmental protection, farmer access to weed-control tools, and herbicide resistance.
In India, glyphosate has not been completely banned. The Central Government clarified in Parliament that it had not banned the sale, distribution or use of glyphosate. However, a 2022 Gazette notification restricted its use to Pest Control Operators (PCOs) following an assessment of concerns related to misuse and occupational exposure.
The issue remains active in India’s pesticide regulatory system. At the 474th Registration Committee meeting held on July 30, 2026, the committee considered an expert report on glyphosate and maintained the approach of restricting its use through trained personnel or PCOs, citing occupational hazards and the need to prevent misuse.
Globally, glyphosate regulation continues to develop differently across jurisdictions. The European Union renewed glyphosate approval in 2023 for 10 years, concluding that there was no scientific or legal justification for a ban under the assessed conditions, while individual countries and sub-national governments have adopted different restrictions.
This category features glyphosate ban announcements, regulatory decisions, government notifications, court and policy developments, scientific research, pesticide safety assessments, occupational-health concerns, herbicide alternatives, resistance management, farmer perspectives, and developments affecting the global glyphosate market.
