BASF Raises Prices of Key Amines Portfolio in Europe; Agrochemical Costs Likely to Be Impacted
26 March 2026, Germany: BASF has announced an increase of up to 30% in prices for its Standard Amines portfolio in Europe, with certain products subject to even higher adjustments. The price revision is effective immediately or as permitted under existing contracts.
The portfolio includes ethanolamines, ethyleneamines, isopropanolamines, methylamines, N,N-dimethylethanolamine (DMEOA), 3-(dimethylamino) propylamine (DMAPA), dimethylformamide (DMF), propylamines, and ethylamines.
The move is expected to have direct implications for the agrochemical sector, where several of these amines serve as critical raw materials. Ethanolamines and isopropanolamines are widely used in the formulation of herbicides, including salts of active ingredients such as Glyphosate and 2,4-D. These compounds also function as emulsifiers and pH regulators in crop protection products.
In addition, methylamines and ethyleneamines are key intermediates in the synthesis of a range of herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides, while compounds such as DMAPA are used in surfactants and adjuvants that enhance pesticide performance. Although solvents like DMF are not typically present in final formulations, they are used during the manufacturing process of agrochemical active ingredients.
Industry observers indicate that the price increase could translate into higher production costs for crop protection products, particularly herbicides, which rely heavily on amine-based formulations. This may have downstream effects on input costs for farmers, especially in markets dependent on imports or global supply chains.
BASF did not specify the exact reasons for the price revision but noted that the increases would apply across its European commodity amines portfolio.
The development comes at a time when the global agrochemical industry is already navigating cost pressures linked to raw materials, energy, and supply chain dynamics, raising concerns about potential impacts on agricultural input affordability in the coming seasons.
