India Raises Kharif 2026 P&K Fertilizer Subsidy by 11.6% (₹4,317 crore) to ₹41,533.81 crore

09 April 2026, New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Narendra Modi, has approved the Nutrient Based Subsidy (NBS) rates for Phosphatic and Potassic (P&K) fertilizers for the Kharif season 2026. The approved rates will be applicable from April 1 to September 30, 2026.

The total budgetary requirement for Kharif 2026 has been estimated at ₹41,533.81 crore, an increase of ₹4,317 crore compared to ₹37,216.15 crore allocated for the Kharif 2025 season. This reflects a rise of approximately 11.6% in subsidy allocation.

The subsidy will be provided under the NBS framework for P&K fertilizers, including Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) and various NPKS grades. The approved rates will be used to release subsidies to fertilizer manufacturers and importers, enabling them to supply fertilizers at controlled prices during the Kharif season.

The government stated that the decision is aimed at ensuring the availability of fertilizers to farmers at subsidized and reasonable prices. The implementation of the approved NBS rates is expected to support the timely supply of fertilizers across the country during the cropping season.

India currently provides 28 grades of P&K fertilizers under the NBS scheme, which has been in operation since April 1, 2010. Under this mechanism, subsidies are fixed on a per-nutrient basis and are disbursed to fertilizer companies based on notified rates.

The decision to revise subsidy rates for Kharif 2026 follows trends in international prices of key fertilizer inputs, including urea, DAP, Muriate of Potash (MOP), and sulphur. These price movements influence the subsidy requirement to maintain the availability of fertilizers in the domestic market.

The Department of Fertilizers will implement the approved subsidy rates for the Kharif 2026 season.
