BASF launches Ampliqan New Nitrification Inhibitor In China To Advance Climate-smart Agriculture
21 September 2026, Shanghai, China: BASF Agricultural Solutions launches Ampliqan®, its latest nitrification inhibitor, for the fertilizer industry in China in 2026. By helping protect nitrogen against losses to the environment, Ampliqan enables fertilizer manufacturers to differentiate and strengthen their product portfolios while supporting farmers in the transition toward climate-smart agricultural practices.
Nitrogen is one of the most important nutrients for plant growth and is essential for achieving high yield and crop quality. However, on average, only about 50 percent of applied nitrogen is taken up by plants. The rest can be lost to the air as ammonia or nitrous oxide (a potent greenhouse gas) or to water through nitrate leaching. Low nitrogen use efficiency not only limits farmers’ yield potential, but also contributes to environmental impacts such as climate warming, acidification, eutrophication, and smog.
Ampliqan® offers the fertilizer industry and farmers a new standard to enhance nitrogen use efficiency. Urea and ammonium-containing fertilizers stabilized with Ampliqan® are better protected against leaching and greenhouse gas emissions. Powered by the active ingredient DMPSA-K2, Ampliqan® helps keep ammonium stable for longer by inhibiting the activity of nitrifying bacteria. This slows the conversion of ammonium to nitrate, helping keep nitrogen in the root zone and available to plants when they need it. Ammonium-based plant nutrition can also enhance the availability of micronutrients and phosphate from the soil, which is important for crop quality.

Ampliqan®’s ready-to-use formulation has excellent storage stability across a broad temperature range and is compatible with all major nitrogen fertilizers, including urea, ammonium nitrate formulas, DAP (diammonium phosphate), MAP (monoammonium phosphate), NPK (nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium) fertilizers and liquid fertilizers. It can be applied at the fertilizer production facility or throughout the supply chain using standard batch and continuous blending equipment. The long shelf life of treated fertilizers provides additional flexibility for the fertilizer industry and farmers.
