High Yielding Paddy Variety: Pusa Rice Hybrid 10

30 May 2026, New Delhi: Pusa Rice Hybrid 10 is a landmark high yielding paddy hybrid released in 2001 by CVRC for commercial cultivation in the irrigated ecosystems of Haryana, Delhi, and Uttarakhand. Developed at ICAR-IARI, New Delhi, it holds the historic distinction of being the first aromatic super fine grain hybrid released in India. This breakthrough combined the heterosis (hybrid vigour) of cross-breeding with the premium grain quality characteristics of aromatic Basmati-type rice.

India’s First Aromatic Super Fine Grain Hybrid

Before Pusa Rice Hybrid 10, hybrid rice in India was largely limited to non-aromatic coarse grain types. The development of an aromatic super fine grain hybrid was a significant scientific achievement, as combining hybrid vigour with complex genetic traits controlling aroma and fine grain characteristics was a considerable breeding challenge. Pusa Rice Hybrid 10 broke this barrier, demonstrating that hybrid rice technology could be applied to premium Basmati-type grain and opening new avenues for farmer profitability.

Yield, Duration, and Profitability

Pusa Rice Hybrid 10 delivers an average yield of 7.0 t/ha — substantially higher than conventional inbred Basmati varieties. It matures in just 110 to 115 days, saving irrigation water and reducing overall crop costs. Its very high per-day productivity and aromatic fine-grain quality result in significantly higher per-acre income and overall profitability for farmers.
