UPL Launches New Herbicide Ricebeaux to Tackle Weed Pressure in India’s Rice Belt

09 July 2026, Raipur: UPL Sustainable Agri Solutions has introduced Ricebeaux, an early post-emergence herbicide developed for rice cultivation, expanding the company’s crop protection portfolio with a solution designed to address increasingly complex weed management challenges. The product is the outcome of more than a decade of research and development and has undergone extensive multi-location field validation across India’s major rice-growing regions.

Weed control remains one of the most significant challenges in rice production, particularly as erratic monsoon patterns, labour shortages, and rising labour costs encourage greater dependence on post-emergence herbicides. Farmers often rely on tank mixtures, repeated applications, or higher dosages to achieve effective control, while difficult weed species such as Echinochloa crus-galli, Cyperus iria, and Cyperus difformis continue to spread across rice-growing areas.

According to UPL, Ricebeaux has been developed to simplify weed management by providing broad-spectrum control of grasses, sedges, and broadleaf weeds through a single application. The herbicide combines Propanil and Penoxsulam, two active ingredients with different modes of action, enabling both contact and systemic activity for improved weed control and supporting herbicide resistance management.

The company states that the formulation offers good crop safety while reducing crop-weed competition during critical stages of plant development. Ricebeaux is recommended for application at the two- to three-leaf stage of weeds and is suitable for both transplanted rice and wet direct-seeded rice (Wet DSR) production systems.

Designed as a ready-to-use pre-mix formulation, the product eliminates the need for on-farm tank mixing, helping simplify field operations while reducing application complexity. UPL says the formulation is intended to deliver consistent performance while helping growers save time, optimise input use, and improve productivity.

Commenting on the launch, Biswajit Borah, Herbicide Portfolio Lead at UPL, said the company developed Ricebeaux to combine advanced research with practical field requirements. He noted that the herbicide is intended to simplify weed management while delivering reliable performance and crop safety, reflecting UPL’s continued investment in research-driven crop protection technologies.

Ricebeaux is being introduced through UPL’s distribution network across key rice-producing states, including Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu.
