UPL Metsuran 600 Herbicide – Metsulfuron-Methyl for Broadleaf Weed Control in Wheat, Sugarcane, Rice, Coffee, Citrus and Pasture

22 May 2026, New Delhi: Metsuran 600 is a selective, systemic herbicide manufactured by UPL do Brasil. The active ingredient is metsulfuron-methyl, a sulfonylurea herbicide classified under HRAC Group B (ALS inhibitors). The product is formulated as a water-dispersible granule (WG) containing 600 g/kg of active ingredient.

Active Ingredient and Mode of Action

Metsulfuron-methyl inhibits acetolactate synthase (ALS), an enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of branched-chain amino acids (valine, leucine and isoleucine). Inhibition of this enzyme disrupts protein synthesis and halts cell division in meristematic tissue, causing growth cessation and gradual plant death.

Selectivity in registered crops is based on the ability of those species to metabolize and detoxify metsulfuron-methyl before phytotoxic concentrations accumulate. Susceptible weed species lack this metabolic capacity.

Registered Crops

  • Wheat, Triticale, Barley, Rye, Oats
  • Irrigated rice
  • Coffee
  • Sugarcane
  • Citrus
  • Pasture

Weed Control Spectrum

Metsuran 600 controls a range of broadleaf weed species in post-emergence application. Efficacy is highest when weeds are in early vegetative stages. Consult the current label for the complete list of controlled species per crop.

Application Guidelines

  • Apply post-emergence while weeds are actively growing and in early development stages
  • Follow label-specified dose rates per crop – sulfonylureas are active at low application rates
  • Avoid overlap of treated areas to prevent crop injury from over-application
  • Check soil pH and organic matter content, as these affect soil persistence and residual activity

Resistance Management

ALS inhibitors (HRAC Group B) are associated with a high risk of resistance development in certain weed species globally. HRAC Brazil recommends rotating Metsuran 600 with herbicides from different mode-of-action groups and using it as part of a diversified weed management program. Do not use Group B herbicides as the sole weed management tool across successive seasons on the same field.
