“Wine Olympics” Returns to China as Ningxia Hosts International Wine Expo
12 June 2025, China: The Fifth China (Ningxia) International Wine Culture and Tourism Expo officially opened on Monday in Yinchuan, the capital of northwest China’s Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, marking the return of the prestigious Concours Mondial de Bruxelles (CMB) — often referred to as the “Wine Olympics” — to China after a seven-year hiatus.
The four-day international event has drawn more than 1,100 domestic and overseas participants, featuring a diverse program of 14 key activities, including winery showcases, a wine innovation competition, and an international art biennial.
The CMB, which made its Chinese debut in Beijing in 2018, has brought nearly 400 international judges to Yinchuan this year to evaluate over 7,000 wine entries. According to Baudouin Havaux, Chairman of the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, the 2025 edition has seen a record-breaking number of submissions from China itself.
“This event marks a new chapter for the global visibility of the Chinese wine industry,” Havaux stated, emphasizing that the selection of Yinchuan for the 32nd edition of the competition reflects China’s rapidly growing presence in the global wine sector, with Ningxia emerging as a leading force.
Ningxia’s wine industry has flourished over the past four decades, benefiting from its distinctive terroir, which offers abundant sunshine, a cool and arid climate, and ideal conditions for grape cultivation. The region, particularly the eastern foothills of the Helan Mountain, is now widely recognized as a “golden zone” for producing premium-quality wines.
By the end of 2024, Ningxia’s vineyards covered more than 600,000 mu (approximately 40,000 hectares), with an annual production capacity reaching 140 million bottles. Today, Ningxia’s wines are exported to over 40 countries and regions worldwide, further solidifying its position as China’s largest and most prominent wine-producing region.
About Ningxia Region
Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, located in northwest China, is a high-altitude, inland region known for its striking landscapes, including deserts, mountains, and the Yellow River basin. While traditionally recognized for its rich cultural heritage and Hui Muslim population, Ningxia has in recent decades gained international attention as China’s premier wine-producing region. Its unique combination of long sunshine hours, cool nights, low rainfall, and well-drained soils — especially along the eastern foothills of Helan Mountain — create ideal conditions for cultivating high-quality wine grapes, earning it comparisons to some of the world’s top wine-growing regions.
