CTF / New Success Story From The Maldives Shows A Strengthened National Food Safety System

28 April 2026, Rome: A new Success Story published by WHO and FAO demonstrates how support from the Codex Trust Fund (CTF) has helped the Maldives strengthen its national food safety system and improve its effective participation in Codex work. Through the project, the country enhanced coordination among key national stakeholders, improved awareness of Codex standards, and reinforced technical capacity to contribute to international food standard-setting processes.

A key achievement highlighted in the country story was the adoption of the Maldives’ first Food Safety Act, providing a stronger legal foundation for food control and consumer protection. The project also supported training and advocacy activities that enabled officials and experts to engage more confidently in Codex committees and discussions.

Khalisa Mohammed, Codex Contact Point for Maldives, says that “the CTF project has paved the way for us to study countries’ food safety systems, which will facilitate trade as well as assuring us that our foods are safe from at least those countries that are following the Codex standards.”
