Indian Govt Pushes Electric Bicycle Adoption to Boost Rural Livelihoods; STREE Pilot Shows Strong Impact

17 March 2026, New Delhi: The Government of India has reinforced its focus on promoting electric bicycles as a key component of sustainable rural mobility and livelihood enhancement, with the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD) highlighting the success of its ongoing STREE (Sustainable Transport for Rural Entrepreneurs through Electric Bicycles) initiative.

At a National Workshop on “Electric Bicycles Powering Rural Livelihoods,” organised in collaboration with Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL), policymakers, industry stakeholders and rural institutions discussed scaling up electric micromobility solutions across India.

Minister of State for Rural Development, Kamlesh Paswan, emphasized that affordable, safe and reliable mobility is critical for improving rural incomes, especially for women. He noted that electric bicycles can significantly enhance last-mile connectivity and support income-generating activities under flagship programmes such as the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM) and the Lakhpati Didi initiative.

The workshop showcased the progress of the STREE scheme, currently being piloted in Bihar, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Implemented by CESL, the initiative promotes the use of electric cargo bicycles among rural entrepreneurs, particularly women from Self-Help Groups (SHGs). Findings from the pilot indicate that e-bicycles help reduce physical drudgery, improve access to markets, and enable diversified livelihood opportunities.

A key highlight of the event was the release of the STREE Impact Assessment Report, which documented field-level learnings and outcomes from pilot states. Women beneficiaries were also recognised as “Energy Champions” for their role in adopting and promoting electric mobility solutions.

The workshop featured live demonstrations of electric cargo bicycles, showcasing their applications in rural supply chains, small businesses, and service delivery. Officials highlighted that such solutions not only improve economic efficiency but also contribute to climate-friendly rural development.

Discussions during the event focused on scaling up manufacturing, strengthening rural service networks, and ensuring policy convergence to make electric bicycles more accessible and affordable. Experts also underlined the importance of integrating electric mobility into broader rural development frameworks.

The government reiterated that promoting electric bicycles aligns with its broader agenda of inclusive growth, women’s empowerment, and environmentally sustainable transport, positioning micromobility as a scalable solution for rural and semi-urban India
