Shivraj Singh Chouhan Vows to Bring Narmada Water to Sehore for Farmers
08 June 2025, New Delhi: Union Minister for Agriculture, Farmers Welfare, and Rural Development, Mr. Shivraj Singh Chouhan, has reaffirmed his commitment to addressing water scarcity in Sehore district by promising to bring Narmada river water to the region. Speaking at a major public event in Sehore on June 7, where he inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for various development projects worth crores of rupees, Chouhan assured farmers that consistent efforts are underway to ensure that Narmada water reaches the fields of Ashta and Ichhawar. The move is expected to significantly improve irrigation facilities and agricultural output in this part of Madhya Pradesh.
Push for Rural Development and Irrigation
In the presence of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, Chouhan emphasized the importance of public participation in development. He stated that the vision of a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India) by 2047, as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is only achievable if villages develop first. Water access, he said, is a top priority for agricultural growth, and bringing Narmada water to Sehore is part of that mission. Chief Minister Yadav also assured the public that the government is committed to extending irrigation facilities to every farm in the region and that complete water support will be provided wherever necessary.
Bhopal’s Growth to Benefit Sehore
During the event, Chouhan also highlighted that Bhopal is being designated as a metropolitan city. This development is expected to benefit Sehore immensely as both cities grow in proximity and infrastructure. Enhanced urban connectivity and integrated growth models are anticipated to create more opportunities for the people of Sehore.
Housing for the Poor under PMAY
Addressing the housing needs of the underprivileged, Chouhan announced that 14 lakh houses had already been sanctioned under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) as per the 2018+ list. He further declared the approval of 7,85,356 additional homes for eligible beneficiaries. Survey and verification processes are currently ongoing to identify more qualifying families, ensuring that every deserving household receives shelter support.
Boost to Rural Employment and Women Empowerment
Chouhan also shared that Madhya Pradesh will receive approximately ₹6,262 crore under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) this year. This allocation is expected to create significant employment opportunities in rural areas, aiding economic development at the grassroots level. He further pointed out that 1.48 crore women across India have now become ‘Lakhpati Didis’—women earning at least ₹1 lakh annually—through various self-help initiatives supported by the government. The goal is to continue expanding these efforts so that no woman remains economically disadvantaged.
Scientific Outreach through Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan
Chouhan also spoke about the ongoing Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan, an initiative aimed at transforming Indian agriculture by bringing scientific knowledge directly to the farmers. As part of this campaign, around 16,000 agricultural scientists have been asked to step out of their research institutions and visit villages. These experts are now engaging with farmers, sharing practical insights to improve crop productivity and modernize farming practices. Chouhan urged farmers to take advantage of this initiative, listen to the scientists, and adopt their recommendations to achieve the goal of “Viksit Krishi” (developed agriculture).
