In this exclusive interview with Global Agriculture, Verdesian Life Sciences CEO Clare Doyle shares her perspectives on the future of nutrient use efficiency technologies, the rapid evolution of biologicals and biostimulants, the company’s global expansion strategy, and the factors shaping the crop nutrition industry. Nimish Gangrade: Verdesian has built a strong portfolio across seed treatments, nutrient use efficiency technologies, fertilizer enhancers, micronutrients, and biostimulants. How do you assess the current size and growth potential of these global markets, and which product categories do you believe will witness the fastest adoption over the next five years?
Clare Doyle: The common thread across all of these markets is that growers are under increasing pressure to produce more with fewer resources. Rising input costs, tighter margins, weather variability, and increasing expectations around environmental stewardship are all driving demand for technologies that improve efficiency and deliver measurable returns. Rather than thinking about these as separate markets, we view them as complementary tools that help growers maximize every acre and input they invest in.
Over the next five years, I believe we’ll continue to see particularly strong adoption of nutrient use efficiency technologies, such as biologicals, biostimulants, inoculants, and micronutrients. These categories are no longer viewed as experimental or “nice to have.” As growers and retailers gain confidence through consistent field performance and local validation, many of these solutions are becoming standard components of fertility programs. That’s especially true when they integrate seamlessly into existing farming practices and provide a clear economic benefit.
At Verdesian, we’ve always believed that innovation has to solve real problems. Our focus is developing technologies that complement existing crop inputs—not replace them—so growers can improve nutrient uptake, reduce losses, strengthen soil health, and ultimately improve profitability. Nimish Gangrade: Looking ahead to the next two to three years, what are Verdesian’s strategic priorities in terms of global expansion? Which regions—such as North America, Latin America, Europe, Southeast Asia, India, or Africa—offer the greatest opportunities for growth, and how will your product portfolio evolve to address the unique agronomic challenges of these markets?
Clare Doyle: Our global strategy begins with understanding that agriculture is inherently local. While many growers around the world face similar challenges—improving nutrient efficiency, managing input costs, and increasing resilience—the crops, regulatory environments and agronomic conditions vary significantly from region to region. That means our approach has to be tailored rather than one-size-fits-all.
North America remains a core market for Verdesian, and we continue to see significant opportunities across Latin America, where we’ve built strong partnerships and have an active innovation pipeline. At the same time, we’re excited about expanding relationships in South and Southeast Asia, where increasing agricultural productivity, soil health, and nutrient efficiency are becoming increasingly important priorities. These markets represent an opportunity not simply because they’re growing, but because growers and retailers are actively looking for practical technologies that improve both productivity and profitability.
Our product development strategy follows those needs. Whether it’s nutrient use efficiency technologies, biological solutions or specialized nutritional products for regional crops, we work closely with growers, retailers, customers, and partners to ensure we’re solving the right agronomic challenges. Much of our recent innovation has been developed alongside customers, and that collaborative approach will continue to shape how our portfolio evolves around the world.
Nimish Gangrade:Global supply chains have faced significant disruptions in recent years, including geopolitical tensions and concerns surrounding key trade routes such as the Strait of Hormuz. How resilient is Verdesian’s sourcing and procurement strategy for raw materials and intermediates? Have recent geopolitical developments affected your operations, and what measures have you implemented to ensure business continuity and supply security?
Clare Doyle: Like every global business, we’ve seen the importance of building resilience into our operations. Rather than reacting to individual geopolitical events, we’ve focused on creating a disciplined supply chain strategy that emphasizes strong supplier relationships, thoughtful planning, and operational flexibility.
Our priority is ensuring we can continue delivering reliable products and support to our customers regardless of changing market conditions. That means continually evaluating sourcing strategies, maintaining close collaboration with suppliers, and incorporating resilience into our broader business planning. To this end, we view supply chain reliability as an important part of serving growers, who depend on timely access to critical crop inputs.
More broadly, agriculture has always operated in an environment of uncertainty—whether that’s weather, commodity markets, or global logistics. Our role is to remain focused on what we can control: developing science-based solutions, supporting our customers and helping growers improve productivity and profitability under a wide range of conditions.
Nimish Gangrade:Southeast Asia is emerging as one of the world’s fastest-growing agricultural input markets, driven by increasing demand for sustainable crop production and higher nutrient efficiency. How important is Southeast Asia within Verdesian’s long-term strategy, and which countries or crop segments do you see as having the greatest potential for your technologies?
Clare Doyle: Southeast Asia is certainly an important part of our long-term growth strategy because many of the challenges growers face there closely align with Verdesian’s expertise. Improving nutrient efficiency, strengthening soil health, and helping crops perform more consistently under increasingly variable conditions are priorities across much of the region.
At the same time, we think about these opportunities through the lens of local agronomy rather than geography alone. Farming practices and regulatory environments vary significantly across the region, so we work closely with regional partners to tailor our portfolio to the unique needs of each market.
We’re particularly encouraged by the partnerships we’re building across South Asia, as well as our work developing nutritional solutions for specialty crops such as rice, chili peppers, apples, and peanuts. More broadly, we believe the greatest opportunity lies in helping growers adopt technologies that fit easily into existing farming practices while delivering measurable agronomic and economic value. That’s a model that translates well across many international markets.
Nimish Gangrade:Across the global agricultural industry, there is growing emphasis on improving nutrient use efficiency, reducing fertilizer losses, and adopting biological solutions. From your perspective, what are the most significant trends shaping the fertilizer enhancer and biostimulant sectors today? How do you see evolving regulations, farmer expectations, carbon sustainability goals, and digital agriculture influencing innovation and market growth over the coming decade?
Clare Doyle: I think four forces are converging to shape the future of our industry: economics, sustainability, regulation, and data-driven agriculture. Importantly, these aren’t independent trends—they’re becoming increasingly interconnected.
First, growers expect every investment to deliver measurable value. They’re looking for technologies with demonstrated field performance, clear return on investment, and seamless integration into existing fertility programs. That’s one reason we’ve seen growing momentum around nutrient use efficiency technologies, biologicals, and biostimulants. Growers are adopting solutions that consistently improve productivity while making better use of every input dollar.
Second, sustainability is evolving beyond environmental stewardship alone. True sustainability also includes the long-term economic viability of farming operations. If we can help growers reduce nutrient losses, improve soil health, and strengthen profitability at the same time, we’ve created a solution that’s sustainable in every sense of the word. I believe that perspective will continue shaping both innovation and purchasing decisions across agriculture.
Finally, we’re seeing digital agriculture, precision farming, and better data transform how decisions are made. More sophisticated analytics allow growers to optimize nutrient management and evaluate product performance with greater confidence. Combined with evolving regulatory frameworks that increasingly emphasize efficiency and environmental outcomes, these trends will continue accelerating innovation.
