Being a sensitive and high-value crop, onions can suffer major losses from even small errors in sowing, irrigation, or pest control. Healthy onions begin with healthy nurseries. Farmers should always use disease-free seeds and prepare well-drained, sandy-loam soil enriched with organic manure. The ideal sowing window is October to December, depending on the region. Raised beds help prevent water stagnation, a leading cause of damping-off and root rot. Maintain adequate spacing of 10 cm between plants and 30 cm between rows to ensure proper aeration and reduce fungal spread. Transplanting should be done when seedlings are 45–50 days old.
Weeds compete aggressively with onion plants for nutrients and moisture, especially during the first 30–40 days. To control broad-leaf and grassy weeds effectively, farmers can use Quizalofop ethyl 4% + Oxyfluorfen 6% EC. This combination offers strong post-emergence weed control, helping the crop establish faster and reducing stress on young plants. Clean fields lead to stronger bulbs and reduce future pest attacks.
Onion crops are highly vulnerable to fungal diseases like purple blotch, downy mildew, and leaf spot, especially in humid conditions, making preventive sprays essential for crop safety. Copper Oxychloride 50% WP serves as an excellent protective fungicide during the early growth stages by creating a strong shield against initial infections. As the crop enters critical growth periods, farmers can apply Azoxystrobin 11% + Tebuconazole 18.3% w/w SC, a powerful systemic fungicide offering both curative and protective action, effectively controlling major foliar diseases and maintaining healthy leaves for better bulb development. Additionally, for managing soil-borne infections and safeguarding nurseries, Carbendazim 50% WP plays a vital role by controlling root rot, damping-off, and early fungal attacks, ensuring the crop remains strong from the very beginning.
Over-irrigation can cause rotting, while moisture stress results in small bulbs. Farmers should maintain uniform moisture through controlled irrigation and avoid waterlogging at all stages. With timely sowing, clean fields, and the right disease-control solutions, farmers can successfully protect their onion crop and secure a healthier, high-quality harvest this season.
