India Releases IS 20201:2026 for Community Seed Bank Management

16 June 2026, New Delhi: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), India’s National Standards Body, has released IS 20201:2026 – Community Seed Bank Management: Requirements, a comprehensive standard designed to strengthen the conservation, management, and exchange of indigenous crop varieties through community-led seed banking systems.

Developed by the Biodiversity Sectional Committee under the Environment and Ecology Department of BIS, the standard provides a structured framework for establishing and operating Community Seed Banks (CSBs). The initiative reflects the growing global recognition that locally adapted crop varieties are essential for building resilient agricultural systems in the face of climate change, biodiversity loss, and increasing food security challenges.

Traditional and indigenous seed varieties often possess valuable traits such as drought tolerance, resistance to pests and diseases, adaptability to local growing conditions, and enhanced nutritional characteristics. As extreme weather events, changing rainfall patterns, and rising temperatures continue to affect agricultural productivity worldwide, the conservation and accessibility of these genetic resources have become increasingly important.

The new standard establishes requirements across the full lifecycle of community seed bank operations, including governance and organizational arrangements, seed collection and acquisition, processing, cleaning, drying, storage, viability testing, documentation, quality assurance, seed regeneration, risk management, and continual improvement practices.

By providing a standardized management framework, the standard aims to enhance the effectiveness, transparency, and long-term sustainability of community seed banks. These decentralized repositories play a critical role in enabling farmers and local communities to conserve, store, access, and exchange high-quality seeds that are adapted to local agroecological conditions.

The standard also contributes to broader international efforts to conserve agricultural biodiversity and supports the objectives of United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) by promoting resilient food production systems and safeguarding crop genetic diversity.

The development of IS 20201:2026 was led by the ICAR-National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources, with contributions from national biodiversity, plant variety protection, and sustainable agriculture institutions.

The standard is a voluntary, certifiable management system standard and is available free of charge through the BIS portal. Agricultural organizations, farmer cooperatives, community seed banks, development agencies, and other stakeholders are encouraged to adopt the framework to strengthen indigenous seed conservation, enhance climate resilience, and support sustainable agricultural development.
