The OpenAI Foundation is the nonprofit organization that governs OpenAI Group PBC and continues OpenAI’s mission of ensuring that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity. Under OpenAI’s updated structure, announced in October 2025, the Foundation retains governance control over OpenAI Group while holding an equity stake in the company.

The Foundation’s initial priorities span Life Sciences and Curing Diseases, AI Resilience, and Civil Society and Philanthropy. Its life-sciences work focuses on using AI to accelerate scientific discovery, disease research, diagnostics, treatments, and cures, while AI Resilience initiatives address areas including AI model safety, biosecurity, and the impact of AI on children and young people.

The Foundation has committed to investing at least $1 billion over one year across its initial programs, including previously announced commitments related to curing diseases and AI resilience. Its community-focused work includes the People-First AI Fund, which committed another $50 million in 2026 to support nonprofits using AI to strengthen community services and expand opportunity.
