ISO Approves ‘Tomovircona’ as Common Name for Novel RNAi Virucide

11 July 2026, US: The ISO 1750 Maintenance Agency has officially approved tomovircona as the ISO common name for a novel RNA interference (RNAi)-based virucide developed by Silicon Gene Technologies (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. The approval follows the completion of the public consultation process, during which no objections to the proposed name were received.

Tomovircona, previously identified by the development code SG-001, received provisional approval on 9 January 2026. With the consultation period now concluded without objections, the name has been formally adopted and will be included in a forthcoming edition of ISO 1750, which lists internationally recognized common names for pesticides and related active substances.

The active ingredient is described as RNA (recombinant tobacco mosaic virus coat protein mRNA-specific double-stranded interfering) and is registered under CAS No. 3052205-09-8.

Tomovircona represents a new generation of RNAi-based crop protection technologies designed to target plant viruses with high specificity. RNA interference is an emerging approach in agriculture that works by silencing specific genes involved in disease development, offering the potential for targeted disease management while minimizing impacts on non-target organisms.

The ISO 1750 Maintenance Agency also confirmed the approved common name in other languages. The French common name is tomovircona, while the Russian common name is томовиркона.

The approval adds another RNAi-based active ingredient to the growing portfolio of next-generation crop protection technologies receiving international recognition through the ISO common naming system.
