Syngenta Joins Annam.AI Initiative to Support India’s Open Agricultural Intelligence Ecosystem
15 June 2026, New Delhi: India’s agricultural innovation ecosystem received a major boost as Syngenta announced its participation as a strategic partner in Annam.AI, an ambitious initiative aimed at building India’s first nationwide open-data agricultural intelligence platform.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed during an event in Nice, France, attended by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron. Under the partnership, Syngenta will contribute its agronomic and research expertise to help develop crop health, pest forecasting and heat stress prediction models for the platform.
Annam.AI (Alliance for Next-gen Nourishment through Agriculture Modernization) is designed to create a digital agricultural intelligence backbone for India. The initiative seeks to provide farmers with free, real-time and hyperlocal advisory services powered by artificial intelligence, integrating crop intelligence, microclimate information and multilingual communication tools.
The program is supported by India’s Ministry of Education and Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and is being led by IIT Ropar in collaboration with global technology partners, including Google. The initiative aims to improve precision agriculture practices, strengthen climate resilience and make advanced agricultural intelligence accessible to farmers across the country.
India’s agriculture sector remains one of the largest in the world, supported by extensive arable land, diverse agro-climatic conditions and a large farming population. However, the sector faces mounting challenges from climate variability, pest outbreaks and resource constraints. Smallholder farmers, who constitute the majority of India’s farming households, often face barriers in accessing advanced technologies and timely agronomic information.
By leveraging open data and artificial intelligence, Annam.AI aims to bridge these gaps and deliver personalized recommendations that can help farmers make better-informed decisions on crop management, weather-related risks and pest control.
Jeff Rowe, Chief Executive Officer of Syngenta Group, said the initiative presents an opportunity to contribute to a digital foundation for Indian agriculture that could benefit hundreds of millions of people. He noted that collaboration between industry, government, academic institutions and technology partners will be essential to achieving the platform’s objectives.
