UPL Expands Nature-Based Agriculture Portfolio with Investment in Japan’s PhytoChrome
11 September 2026, New Delhi: UPL Corp Japan has acquired a stake in PhytoChrome Co., Ltd., a Japanese company specializing in biostimulants and fertilizers, strengthening a strategic relationship that has been in place since October 2023.
The investment is expected to deepen UPL’s NPP Biosolutions portfolio and accelerate the development of nature-based agricultural solutions designed to address increasingly complex challenges facing growers, including climate stress and changing soil conditions.
Through the partnership, UPL Corp Japan and PhytoChrome will combine their complementary technologies and expertise to develop solutions aimed at improving crop performance, resilience and sustainability. PhytoChrome will continue to operate independently, while the collaboration will focus on generating long-term value for farmers and the broader agricultural ecosystem.
A key area of collaboration is the Impact Series, a portfolio developed by combining NPP’s GA142 technology, Ajinomoto’s amino acids and PhytoChrome’s innovations. The solutions are designed to support crop performance under a range of environmental stresses, including heat, drought, salinity, cold conditions and soil acidity.
The investment also reflects the growing role of biostimulants and other biological inputs in helping agriculture adapt to climate variability while maintaining productivity. By combining naturally derived technologies with agronomic expertise, UPL’s NPP Biosolutions business aims to provide growers with tools that contribute to environmental, economic and social sustainability.
The partnership with PhytoChrome strengthens UPL’s presence in Japan’s growing biologicals market while supporting its broader strategy to expand practical, nature-based solutions for more resilient and sustainable agricultural production.
