Bilateral meeting with H.E. Tran Thanh Man, Chair of the National Assembly of Vietnam
16 April 2026, Rome: The FAO Director-General, Dr QU Dongyu, met today with H.E. Tran Thanh Man, Chair of the National Assembly of Vietnam at the Organization’s headquarters in Rome.
The Director-General welcomed the Chair as the first Vietnamese senior leader to visit FAO and provided a brief overview of FAO’s history, appreciating the long-term partnership between FAO and Vietnam. The Director-General warmly congratulated Vietnam on its social and economic development achievements during the past three decades, and highlighted Vietnam’s self-dependence in food supply as an important contribution to world food security.
The Director-General further encouraged Vietnam to share more of its experience, including through relevant FAO platforms, with other member countries, especially Asian and African countries facing food security challenges. The Director-General proposed key areas for future collaboration such as normative work; joint promotion of agricultural science and technology innovation to improve production efficiency and quality of small-scale farmers; strengthening of market information exchange; enhanced cooperation through the FAO One Country One Commodity Product (OCOP) initiative; and digital agriculture.
The Director-General also informed the Chair of the new Global Partnership Programme for Transboundary Animal Diseases (GFF-TADs) to be launched in Rome in June, designed to transform the global approach to fighting cross-border livestock diseases, and looked forward to Vietnam joining the Programme.
The Chair of the National Assembly thanked the Director-General for the hospitality and expressed his high praise for his leadership and the crucial role of FAO in the international agrifood arena. He further conveyed appreciation for FAO’s long-standing support to Vietnam in the agriculture sector, highlighting among others the work undertaken in capacity development, natural disaster prevention and preparedness, and climate resilient agriculture. The Chair underlined the fundamental role of agriculture in Vietnam and looked forward to continued support from FAO in key areas such as zoonotic disease prevention, climate friendly and resilient agriculture, digital agriculture and rural development.
The Director-General reaffirmed FAO’s support for Vietnam, and both parties agreed to continue the close collaboration.
The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam, H.E. Dang Hoang Giang, also participated in the bilateral meeting. Additionally, H.E. Vo Van Hong, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment of Vietnam, with whom the Director-General had a courtesy discussion prior to the meeting, was also present.
