Government of India Approves 20 Lakh MT Potato Procurement in Uttar Pradesh

21 April 2026, New Delhi: The Government of India has approved key procurement decisions for farmers in Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, aimed at ensuring better prices and protecting growers from distress sales. The approvals were granted by Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

The government said the decisions are intended to guarantee fair and remunerative prices for farmers, reduce the impact of volatile market conditions, and strengthen stability in the agricultural marketplace. The approvals were issued after a virtual meeting chaired by Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan with agriculture ministers and senior officials from the concerned states.

Uttar Pradesh: 20 Lakh MT Potato Procurement Approved

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare approved Uttar Pradesh’s proposal for potato procurement under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) for the 2025-26 agricultural year. Under the decision, 20 lakh metric tonnes of potatoes will be procured across the state at a Market Intervention Price of Rs. 6,500.9 per metric tonne.

The Government of India’s estimated financial contribution for the programme is Rs. 203.15 crore. The move is expected to help potato growers secure better returns, prevent distress sales and stabilise the potato market in the state.

Andhra Pradesh: Chana Procurement Ceiling Increased

The Centre also approved Andhra Pradesh’s request under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) for chana procurement. Initially, procurement of 94,500 metric tonnes of chana (Bengal gram) was approved. Following a further request from the state government, the maximum procurement limit for the Rabi Marketing Season 2025-26 has now been raised to 1,13,250 metric tonnes.

The revised limit is expected to provide relief to chana farmers in Andhra Pradesh by ensuring remunerative prices and reducing the risk of distress sales.

Karnataka: Tur Procurement Extended Till May 15

In Karnataka, the Centre approved a 30-day extension for procurement of tur (pigeon pea/arhar) at Minimum Support Price (MSP) under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) for the Kharif 2025-26 season. Procurement will now continue till May 15, 2026.
