India: UPL Warns Against Counterfeit Electron Seed Treatment After 2,500-Litre Seizure in Uttar Pradesh
20 June 2026, Meerut: UPL has raised concerns over the increasing circulation of counterfeit agricultural inputs following the seizure of 2,500 litres of fake Electron seed treatment product during an Agriculture Department raid in western Uttar Pradesh in May 2026.
According to the company, laboratory testing has been conducted on the seized material. The incident has prompted renewed calls for farmer awareness and vigilance while purchasing seed treatment products.
Electron is a seed treatment product used to protect seeds and young seedlings from early-stage pests and diseases. UPL stated that genuine seed treatment products play a critical role in ensuring healthy crop establishment and supporting farm productivity.
The company noted that the counterfeit material seized during the raid lacked key information typically found on registered agricultural products, including manufacturing details, expiry dates, and batch numbers. UPL advised farmers to treat the absence of such information as a warning sign and avoid purchasing products with incomplete or missing labels.
The seizure highlights the broader challenge posed by counterfeit and lookalike agricultural products in the market. Industry experts have repeatedly emphasized that fake inputs can compromise crop performance, reduce productivity, and result in economic losses for farmers.
UPL urged growers to verify product authenticity before purchase by checking packaging details, manufacturing and expiry information, ingredient declarations, batch numbers, and product seals. The company also recommended obtaining invoices from retailers and using QR-code-based verification systems, where available, to confirm product genuineness.
“Counterfeit agricultural products remain a serious concern for the farming community,” a UPL spokesperson said. “Farmers should ensure they purchase authentic seed treatment products and verify product details before use. Awareness and vigilance are important in preventing the spread of lookalike products and safeguarding crop productivity.”
