
India’s Summer Crop Sowing Area Jumps to 83.93 Lakh Hectares in 2025
03 June 2025, New Delhi: The Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare has released the latest data on the progress of summer crop sowing as of May 30, 2025. According to the figures, the total area sown under summer crops has reached 83.93 lakh hectares, marking a significant increase of 9.21 lakh hectares over last year’s area of 74.72 lakh hectares.
Rice Leads with Major Expansion
Rice cultivation during the summer season has witnessed a notable rise. This year, 35.86 lakh hectares have been sown under rice, compared to 31.06 lakh hectares last year. This reflects an increase of 4.80 lakh hectares, indicating a strong push in paddy cultivation during the summer months, well above the normal summer rice area of 30.80 lakh hectares.
Pulses Gain Momentum with Significant Growth in Greengram and Blackgram
Pulses have also recorded commendable growth this year. The area sown has reached 24.25 lakh hectares, up from 21.48 lakh hectares in 2024—an increase of 2.77 lakh hectares.
Within this category, Greengram (Moong) leads the expansion, covering 21.00 lakh hectares compared to 18.74 lakh hectares last year, showing a surge of 2.27 lakh hectares. Blackgram (Urad) has been sown in 3.07 lakh hectares, higher than 2.57 lakh hectares last year, marking an increase of 0.50 lakh hectares. The area under other pulses remains steady at 0.18 lakh hectares.
Coarse Cereals (Shree Anna) Register Moderate Growth
The category of Shree Anna cum Coarse Cereals has shown positive momentum, with the area increasing to 14.37 lakh hectares in 2025 from 12.95 lakh hectares in 2024—an increase of 1.42 lakh hectares.
Within this group:
- Maize dominates with a sharp rise to 8.80 lakh hectares compared to 7.37 lakh hectares last year, an increase of 1.43 lakh hectares.
- Jowar has seen a marginal rise from 0.46 lakh hectares to 0.48 lakh hectares.
- Ragi has grown from 0.13 lakh hectares to 0.16 lakh hectares.
- Bajra, however, has seen a slight decline to 4.90 lakh hectares from 4.96 lakh hectares.
- Small Millets remained steady at 0.02 lakh hectares.
Oilseed Coverage Grows Marginally
Oilseed cultivation for summer 2025 has reached 9.45 lakh hectares, up from 9.23 lakh hectares last year, a modest increase of 0.22 lakh hectares.
In terms of individual crops:
- Groundnut has increased to 4.31 lakh hectares from 4.11 lakh hectares, an addition of 0.20 lakh hectares.
- Sunflower cultivation has gone up slightly to 0.36 lakh hectares, from 0.31 lakh hectares last year.
- Sesamum saw a slight drop from 4.73 lakh hectares to 4.70 lakh hectares.
- Other oilseeds accounted for 0.07 lakh hectares this year.
