Odisha Farmers to Benefit as India Approves MSP Procurement Worth Over ₹1,428 Crore for Five Crops

23 April 2026, New Delhi: India’s Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, has approved Minimum Support Price (MSP) procurement for five crops in Odisha with a total value exceeding ₹1,428.31 crore, providing a major boost to farmers in the eastern state.

The approvals were granted during a virtual meeting held at Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi, with Odisha Deputy Chief Minister and Agriculture Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo. The decision covers procurement of green gram (moong), black gram (urad), groundnut, sunflower, and mustard under the government’s support price framework.

Strong MSP Support for Odisha Farmers

During the meeting, Chouhan said the central government remains fully committed to supporting Odisha’s farmers and ensuring that the benefits of MSP reach genuine cultivators in a timely and transparent manner.

He emphasized that procurement operations must be conducted directly from farmers, with robust safeguards to prevent intermediaries or traders from misusing the system.

Crop-Wise Procurement Approvals

The approved procurement volumes and estimated MSP values are as follows:

  • Moong: 34,492 metric tonnes worth ₹302.42 crore
  • Urad: 119,387 metric tonnes worth ₹931.21 crore
  • Groundnut: 20,219 metric tonnes worth ₹146.85 crore
  • Sunflower: 2,210 metric tonnes worth ₹17.06 crore
  • Mustard: 4,964 metric tonnes worth ₹30.77 crore

The combined procurement value crosses ₹1,428 crore, representing significant income support for farmers growing pulses and oilseeds in Odisha.

Procurement Under PM-AASHA

The procurement process has been proposed for a 90-day period under PM-AASHA, with the Odisha government already working on a Point of Sale (PoS)-based procurement system aimed at improving efficiency and transparency.

The minister stressed the importance of continuous monitoring so that only actual farmer produce is purchased at MSP, ensuring public funds are used effectively and farmers receive the intended benefit.

Focus on Reviving Sunflower Cultivation

Chouhan also highlighted the importance of sunflower cultivation, noting that the crop has gradually declined in several regions of India. He welcomed Odisha’s continued sunflower production and said the Centre would extend all possible support to expand acreage and improve yields.

He added that scientific and technical assistance would be made available whenever required to help the state strengthen sunflower cultivation.

Transparent Procurement a Priority

Reiterating the Centre’s position, Chouhan said transparent and honest procurement systems are essential for delivering real gains to farmers. He urged the state government to ensure procurement remains farmer-centric and free from manipulation.

The latest approvals are expected to strengthen farmer confidence, support oilseed and pulse production, and reinforce India’s broader food security and rural income objectives.
