Soybean Seed Treatment Recommendations 2025: Latest ICAR Advisory to Prevent Early Disease and Pest Damage

16 June 2025, New Delhi: Early-stage diseases and insect pests can significantly reduce soybean crop stands and yields. The ICAR – National Soybean Research Institute, Indore, stresses that treating soybean seeds with fungicides and insecticides before sowing is essential to safeguard young plants and ensure uniform crop establishment.

For ease and broad-spectrum protection, farmers are advised to treat seeds with a pre-mixed formulation containing Azoxystrobin 2.5%, Thiophanate Methyl 11.25%, and Thiamethoxam 25% FS at the rate of 10 ml per kilogram of seed. This combined treatment effectively protects against both fungal diseases and insect pests from the earliest stage.

Alternative Two-Step Seed Treatment Method

Alternatively, seeds can be treated separately with fungicides and insecticides. For fungicide treatment, ICAR recommends Penflufen + Trifloxystrobin (1 ml/kg seed), Thiram + Carboxin (3 g/kg seed), or Thiram + Mancozeb (3 g/kg seed). After drying, insecticide treatment with Thiamethoxam 30 FS (10 ml/kg seed) or Imidacloprid 48 FS (1.25 ml/kg seed) should be applied. This method ensures targeted protection tailored to specific threats.

Timing and Application Best Practices

Seed treatment should be done well in advance of sowing to allow the chemicals to dry and be absorbed properly. Properly treated seeds prevent seed rot, damping-off, and early insect damage, supporting vigorous germination and a healthy crop stand.
