Syngenta Unveils EXORT Technology Based on Plant microRNAs for Next-Generation Biologicals
22 September 2026, Switzerland: Syngenta has announced EXORT™ technology, a new biological platform based on naturally occurring plant microRNAs that the company says can help crops make more efficient use of their own biological processes.
The technology is being developed for a new generation of biological crop solutions designed to improve crop productivity and quality without requiring changes to farmers’ existing field practices. Applied to crop leaves at very low doses, EXORT™ technology uses selected naturally occurring microRNAs to influence biological processes involved in plant development, resource use and responses to changing environmental conditions.
According to Syngenta, its field development program has generated yield gains across rice, soybean, corn, cotton, vegetables and fruit crops, with results reported across multiple years and geographies. The company describes the program as one of the largest biological field programs of its kind.
Technology Based on Plant microRNAs
The scientific basis of EXORT™ lies in microRNAs, small molecules naturally present in plants that regulate how genetic information is used within cells. By acting as regulatory signals, microRNAs can influence a range of biological processes, including plant growth and development.
Syngenta says advances in genomics, bioinformatics and plant science have enabled researchers to identify specific naturally occurring microRNAs and investigate their potential for agricultural applications.
Camilla Corsi, Head of Crop Protection Research & Development at Syngenta, said the technology translates knowledge of a fundamental biological mechanism into an agricultural application. She highlighted advances in genomics and plant science as enabling more precise identification and application of beneficial natural microRNAs.
First Products Expected From 2027
Syngenta has been researching microRNAs for several years as part of its internal R&D programs. The company is now positioning EXORT™ as a platform technology for developing biological crop solutions.
The first products incorporating EXORT™ technology are planned for launch from 2027, with a phased introduction expected across approximately 20 countries and multiple crops in subsequent years.
The company said the technology could form a platform for a broader portfolio of biological products aimed at improving crop productivity and quality while supporting more efficient resource use.
The announcement comes as agricultural biologicals continue to expand beyond conventional microbial and biostimulant approaches, with increasing research attention on molecular mechanisms that can influence plant growth and development.
