China Begins Crackdown on Illegal Pesticides

18 April 2026, Beijing: China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs announced on April 16 that it has launched a nationwide special enforcement campaign against the illegal production, sale, and use of prohibited and restricted pesticides, aiming to safeguard agricultural product quality and food safety.

A ministry official said the campaign will take strict action against violations involving banned and restricted pesticides while helping restore order and transparency in the pesticide market.

The nationwide rectification drive will focus on three key areas: illegal production, illegal sales, and illegal adulteration. Authorities will carry out inspections of pesticide manufacturers and dealers, strengthen product supervision and sampling, conduct both scheduled and surprise inspections, and prepare lists of violations for legal action based on the seriousness of offences.

The ministry has also called for stronger accountability of local authorities, with closer coordination across national, provincial, municipal, and county levels, as well as greater cooperation between regions and departments.

Officials emphasized the need for disciplined enforcement, standardized inspection procedures, and the removal of local protectionism to ensure the campaign achieves effective and lasting results.
