22 September 2026, Rome: FAO Director-General Dr QU Dongyu met with The Right Honourable Mwigulu L. Nchemba, Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, on the margins of the FAO Global Conference for Actions on One Health in Agrifood Systems, at FAO headquarters.
The Director-General welcomed the Prime Minister, thanked him for attending the conference and appreciated the close collaboration between FAO and the United Republic of Tanzania. He further expressed deep appreciation for the United Republic of Tanzania’s role as one of the founding members of the African Union, and commended the Government for its continued focus on One Health and transboundary animal disease control. The Director-General reiterated FAO’s commitment to continue strengthening collaboration with the country to accelerate action on One Health in agrifood systems.
The Prime Minister thanked the Director-General for the opportunity to meet and for the support extended by FAO over many years. The Prime Minister further appreciated FAO’s leadership in agrifood systems transformation, as well as its normative work on resilience building across various health sectors, including soil health, as part of its overall mandate.
The discussions centered on strengthening partnership on the Country Programming Framework (CPF), in line with the Government’s National Agenda for 2050. The Prime Minister informed that the Government had increased the national budget for agriculture with the aim of transforming various sectors across the agrifood system, in close collaboration with FAO, to increase production, with a focus on livestock, fisheries and aquaculture, as well as to improve seeds and fertilizer quality, agriculture mechanization and digitization, and to strengthen the resilience of smallholders, among others.
The discussions further focused on improving land policy and the inclusion of farmers to align with the changing needs of the population, including through the use of AI and private sector investment in agriculture projects. The pair discussed the use of digital tools to organize small farmers using tools such as localized CODEX to follow international standards as this would enable farmers to improve value for their produce and in turn ensure their access to international markets. Both agreed that this would accelerate economic growth and improve the country’s GDP.
Finally, the pair further agreed on the importance of a holistic approach, and on integrating climate smart agriculture to strengthen the sector, with a strong focus on soil health.
