ITC’s Technico to Expand Aeroponic Potato Seed Facility to 100 Million Capacity
23 July 2026, New Delhi: ITC Limited is expanding its agricultural business through investments in seed technology, biological extracts and value-added agriculture, with its wholly owned subsidiary Technico increasing the capacity of its aeroponic potato seed production facility.
Speaking at the ITC Annual General Meeting 2026, ITC Chairman Sanjiv Puri said the investment comes as climate change and food security continue to influence agricultural production.
Technico, a producer of pre-basic potato seeds, is adding 60 controlled-environment greenhouses, increasing its combined production capacity to 100 million TECHNITUBER potato mini-tubers. The company said the expansion will support the production of disease-free planting material for potato cultivation.
Puri said seed systems play a role in improving agricultural productivity, crop quality, climate resilience, nutritional security and farmer incomes.
ITC is also expanding research through its Life Sciences and Technology Centre (LSTC). The company is using breeding technologies, molecular genetics and digital tools to develop crop varieties across tobacco, wheat, potato, eucalyptus and subabul. According to ITC, these programmes have resulted in yield improvements of 15% to 50%.
The company has also commissioned a US FDA-compliant nicotine derivative processing facility for export markets, serving customers in Europe, the United States and South Korea. ITC is also working on medicinal and aromatic plants by developing plant varieties, formulations and botanical extracts for domestic and export markets, while providing farmers with cultivation training.
Value-added agriculture remains part of ITC’s agri-business strategy. According to Puri, the portfolio has recorded a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 33% over the past five years. The business includes certified organic crops, processed spices, horticultural products, coffee, aquaculture and commodities such as high-starch maize and high-gluten wheat.
ITC is also expanding its digital agriculture platform, ITCMAARS, to develop a Farming-as-a-Service (FaaS) model that connects crop production with buyer requirements through certification, traceability and sourcing systems for domestic and export markets.
Puri said ITC’s spices business exports organic spices supported by certified cultivation, farmer linkages and its spice processing facility at Guntur.
