High Yielding Paddy Variety: Pusa Basmati 1509
30 May 2026, New Delhi: Pusa Basmati 1509 is a highly popular high yielding paddy variety released in 2013 by CVRC for the Basmati growing areas of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Western UP, Uttarakhand, and Jammu & Kashmir. Developed at ICAR-IARI, New Delhi, this variety was created specifically to overcome the key agronomic weaknesses of Pusa Basmati 1121, and has rapidly become one of the most widely grown Basmati varieties in India.
Overcoming the Weaknesses of Pusa Basmati 1121
Pusa Basmati 1509 is non-lodging and non-shattering, making it far better suited to mechanised harvesting. More significantly, it matures in just 115 days — 30 days earlier than Pusa Basmati 1121. This also saves approximately 6 irrigations per crop cycle compared to PB 1121, making it a water-efficient and cost-saving option for farmers in the water-stressed Basmati belt.
Yield and Grain Quality
Pusa Basmati 1509 delivers an average yield of 5.0 t/ha while maturing in just 115 days. It retains the premium grain quality characteristics of Pusa Basmati 1121 — extra-long slender grains, strong Basmati aroma, excellent elongation on cooking, and the desirable non-sticky texture — ensuring it commands premium prices in domestic and export markets.
