BASF Launches New Insecticide Efficon® in Egypt
16 June 2026, Cairo: BASF Agricultural Solutions has launched Efficon® in Egypt, introducing a new insecticide for the control of key sucking pests in high-value crops.
Efficon® contains Dimpropyridaz (Axalion® Active) at 120 g/L SL and provides a new mode of action for managing piercing and sucking pests across a range of crops. The product is designed to help growers address pest pressures while supporting resistance management strategies.
Egyptian farmers continue to face challenges in protecting crops from insect pests amid changing climatic conditions, evolving pest populations, and concerns over resistance resulting from the repeated use of existing insecticide classes. These factors can affect crop yields, quality, and farm profitability.
Efficon® has been developed for use in vegetables and potatoes and targets piercing-sucking insects such as whiteflies and aphids. By rapidly stopping insect feeding, the product helps reduce virus transmission and limit crop damage. Classified under IRAC Group 36, Efficon® introduces a new mode of action that can be incorporated into resistance management programmes.
The insecticide is also compatible with Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programmes, enabling growers to integrate it with broader crop protection strategies.
Commenting on the launch, Youssef Babouih, Regional Director of BASF Agricultural Solutions for Egypt and the Middle East, said: “Efficon® represents an addition to our portfolio of agricultural solutions and reflects our commitment to bringing new technologies to growers. Developed through investment in research and development, it addresses changing agricultural needs and the challenges faced by farmers. With Efficon®, we aim to support producers of high-value crops with solutions that help protect yields, maintain crop quality, and support competitiveness in domestic and export markets.”
Dr. Murat Ayaz, Vice President of Agricultural Solutions for Southern Europe, Middle East, and Africa at BASF, added: “The launch of Efficon® reflects our commitment to delivering agricultural solutions across markets. At BASF, we believe innovation plays an important role in the future of agriculture. We invest approximately €2.1 billion annually in research and development worldwide, with nearly €1 billion dedicated to agricultural solutions. Through these investments and our research network, we develop technologies that help farmers improve productivity and support sustainability objectives.”
