High Yielding Paddy Variety: Pusa Basmati 1847
30 May 2026, New Delhi: Pusa Basmati 1847 is a high yielding paddy variety developed through Marker-Assisted Selection (MAS) at ICAR-IARI, New Delhi. It is a near isogenic line (NIL) of the short-duration Basmati variety Pusa Basmati 1509. Pusa Basmati 1847 retains the highly desirable short-duration, non-lodging, and non-shattering traits of its parent while adding critical inbuilt resistance to both bacterial blight and blast diseases. It is recommended for the Basmati GI regions of Delhi, Punjab, and Western Uttar Pradesh.
Disease Resistance
Pusa Basmati 1847 has been developed by pyramiding four important disease resistance genes: xa13 and Xa21 for bacterial blight resistance, and Pi54 and Pi2 for blast resistance. This genetic architecture significantly reduces the disease burden on the crop, enabling farmers to avoid expensive chemical sprays while maintaining crop health and grain integrity throughout the season.
Agronomic Profile
Pusa Basmati 1847 is a semi-dwarf, non-lodging, non-shattering Basmati variety that completes its seed-to-seed life cycle in just 120 days. Nursery sowing is recommended between June 15 and June 30, with the crop ready for harvest in the second week of October. With an impressive average yield of 5.7 t/ha and a plant height of 110 cm, this variety outperforms many contemporaries in productivity. Its shorter maturity period allows timely field clearance for the wheat crop in the rice-wheat belt.
Grain Quality
Pusa Basmati 1847 produces extra-long slender grains with a kernel length of 8.51 mm before cooking, among the longest in the Basmati category. On cooking, the kernel elongates to an impressive 16.69 mm. The amylose content is intermediate at 22.88%, ensuring non-sticky, fluffy cooked rice. Grain chalkiness is very occasional, and the variety has a strong Basmati aroma with flaky cooked appearance and tenderness.
